Losing sight of seasonal eating?

There was a time when pretty much everybody would know what’s in season and what’s not – it was second nature. And while this is because people had no choice as other produce simply wasn’t available, I think it’s quite sad to think that now that we don’t need to be diligent in finding out what’s available, there is no real desire to eat things that fall within the British seasons.

Raspberries in January? sure, no problem. Broccoli in December? Just pop down to your local Sainsbury’s – it’s all there, but it certainly won’t be produce that’s come from our own farms.

One way we can all include some more locally sourced goods in everyday lives is to keep an eye on what’s in season in the UK – and who knows, you could end up trying a whole host of new recipes and flavours as a result.

I’m not saying that we should just eat things that have have been cultivated in the UK – as it’s bloody difficult to do, and you end up cutting out huge food groups, which all turns into a bit of a nightmare. But, one way we can all include some more locally sourced goods in everyday lives is to keep an eye on what’s in season in the UK – and who knows, you could end up trying a whole host of new recipes and flavours as a result.

So, I’ll do my best to clearly show what’s hot and what’s not on the shelves right now. And, I’m not going to lie, there are many conflicting recommendations on seasonal eating, so I’ll do my best to keep it as simples possible.

You can also head over to Instagram, where I’ve highlighted what’s in season in the UK each month or the ‘in season’ section of this website.
